What
Do You Seek?
That's
the question when it comes to a religious Vocation. What do you
want out of our life? If you are looking for God in a community
of believers you are on the right track. However that track is
the same for all of us. The Religious Life is a little more demanding.
And the Monastic Way is even more so. This is not a way of life
for the squeamish or for someone who is satisfied with "good
enough." If you seek God and you seek community and you are
willing to live under a Rule and an Abbot, then the Benedictine
life may be just what God is calling you to live.
What Is the Rule?
The
Rule of Saint Benedict was written over 1500 years ago during
the last days of he Roman Empire. Saint Benedict studied the many
ways that the early Christians sought to do Gods' will and live
the Gospels. His Rule became the model for monks in the Western
church. Holy Scripture and the Rule of the foundations of the
life of a monk. |
What Is a Monk?
In the Roman Catholic church a monk is a man who has been called to live
in a community and follow the Rule under the direction of an Abbot (or
"spiritual father"). He chooses to live in a particular monastery for
the rest of his life and attempts to constantly convert his life with
the help of the community and the Abbot.
